    Description

Charleston, SC- Bank of the State of South Carolina
    0 18__ as Sheheen 602
    PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The bank was chartered in 1812 and continued in business until 1865, when it was ruled to be a wholly state-owned institution that must pay off its obligations rather than enter bankruptcy which was the normal course of action for most southern banks after the war. This 0 design features three allegorical vignettes. The one at left portrays a maiden seated with a lyre or harp, perhaps representing
    Music.
The center vignette appears to depict
    Commerce
seated with navigational instruments, a globe, and a cornucopia. The right vignette is clearly
    Liberty
standing by a table. This is a 20th century proprietary proof printed by ABNCo from the original plate still in its possession for general corporate purposes and programs.
