The cup holder is a stand, embracing and supporting a glass beaker, mostly cylindrical in shape, having a handle for consuming hot tea without burning a palm. In Russia and the CIS, cupholders are traditionally used in rail transport as an obligatory element of table setting (their use significantly increases the stability of the glasses). In addition, the coasters serve to remove heat, so that the glasses do not burst when they are poured in boiling water.
It is believed that modern-style coasters appeared in Russian passenger trains when Sergei Witte was director of the Department of Railway Affairs of the Ministry of Finance (since 1889) and Minister of Railways of the Russian Empire (in 1892). The largest production of cup holders is located in the town of Kolchugin, Vladimir Region, in a factory of cutlery and crockery, founded by merchant Alexander Kolchugin in the 19th century as part of the metallurgical manufactory (currently, the plant is located in the 7th shop of consumer goods at the Kolchugtsvetmet plant).
